The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. The flu is spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include: fever, headache, cough, runny nose, fatigue, muscles aches and sore throat. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting the flu vaccine each year.

Hepatitis A vaccine:

Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver caused by the HAV virus. It is spread through contact with infected persons or through contaminated food and water. Hepatitis A causes fever, fatigue, loss of appetite and jaundice (yellow skin and eyes). Long-term complications can include: serious liver disease and even death.

Vaccination is recommended for individuals who want to reduce their chances of contacting Hepatitis A. Multiple doses are needed to ensure full long-term protection against the virus.

Hepatitis B vaccine:

Hepatitis B another liver infection, is caused by the HBV virus. It is spread through blood, sperm and other bodily fluids. The infection causes fever, fatigue, jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), and inflammation of the liver. The chronic infection may scar the liver (cirrhosis) and lead to liver failure and death.

Tetanus (Lockjaw) vaccine:

Tetanus is caused by a bacteria that blocks nerve reflexes in the spinal column. The bacteria enters the body through an open wound; even a tiny cut can become contaminated by dirt, saliva or dust. The first symptom is spasm of the jaw muscles, (lockjaw) followed by full-body spasms.

Subsequent to the vaccine series given in childhood, booster doses are required every 10 years to ensure long-term protection.
